Shape - November 1998
A Work of Heart - by Malissa Thompson

Before she even had her driver's license, our cover model, actress Rebecca Gayheart was well on her way to being washed up - in the best possible way, that is. "I moved to New York when I was 15 and my first big job was for Noxzema. I did commercials and print ads," says Gayheart. "I became known as the Noxzema girl."

Her early years in Manhattan were the best of times - and the worst. "I was a Southern Belle among these cool New Yorkers," recalls Gayheart who'd grown up in the tiny town of Pinetop, KY. "The kids at my new school didn't accept me. They made fun of my accent and the way I dressed."

These days, Gayheart, 26, is having the last laugh. She has appeared in TV shows, such as "Beverly Hills 90210," and in films including "Nothing to Lose" opposite Tim Robbins and "Scream 2." With her new movies - the high anticipated thriller "Urban Legend" and "The Hangman's Daughter" - some in Hollywood say 1999 will be Gayheart's big year. "I try not to care whether people think I'm a hit or not," she says. "I'd rather not be one of those overnight sensations who just disappear."

Her career isn't the only aspect of her life to benefit from her easy-going, look-to-the-future attitude. For the past 11 years she's been seeing the same guy, film director Brett Ratner. The pair met on Gayheart's first week in New York. "We've gone through high and low points," Gayheart admits, "and I've learned that you can't expect someone else to make you happy."

Still, Gayheart says that being an actress nowadays requires a lot more than a positive affirmation or two to keep her mood up. "Being in the business is stressful. You never known if and when you're going to get another job." She says that moving from New York to Los Angeles a few years back helped. "The lifestyle here is healthier," says Gayheart. "I still get anxious, and when that happens the best thing I can do for myself is to get on a treadmill and sweat it out. I have one at home, and I also have a pool so I swim laps."

So much for her body and mind, how does Gayheart maintain that fresh-scrubbed all-American look? "My beauty routine is basically plenty of sleep and lots of water," she says.
